About…

This blog/website has one aim – to help you trust Jesus Christ and grow to be more like him day-by-day. Quite simply, that is my goal in life and I want to share it with others.

Most of the articles are notes from messages I preach in my home church week by week, you will also find book reviews, quotes and other stuff I have found which may be useful to you. Use it; it’s all free, just don’t reproduce any of it pretending it is your own work; an acknowledgement is always an encouragement.

What kind of a Christian am I?

Good question, if you are not asking that by now you should be, the world is full of spiritual shysters.

I am an evangelical; that means I believe in Jesus as my personal Saviour, I accept the Bible as the world of God and I want to share it with others. Heart and soul I embrace the great Christian creeds, and those of the Protestant Reformation. By those standards, the stuff on this site is sound.

But I take this little passage very seriously:

You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere men? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not mere men? What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe – as the Lord has assigned to each his task.

1 Corinthians 3:3-5

The labels we use to define ourselves, Calvinist, Methodist, Anglican… are helpful nicknames for convenience but – on a spiritual level - are worldly. If you catch me whipping up party spirit in these pages – tell me to knock it off.

So you may occasionaly worry that I don’t speak your Christian ‘language’.

Quite right, I have been avoiding holy jargon-words for more than thirty years and don’t intend to start using them now! So don’t dismiss me because I don’t use your favourite theological dialect – believe me, your jargon is not that useful anyway.

Above all, I want to glorify God by being understood – so that people can see the way clearly. Remember, this blog/website has one aim.

Hey, Dave! We’ve lost track of your home address, but wanted to wish you a lovely Christmas. So good to be able to keep up with you and Cathi through the Bethany City Church website. We’re doing fine, still enjoying having three teenage daughters, interesting work, and a strong church community. Christmas cheer to all the Burkes! With love, Greg and Carolyn Perry
